Just had to write a small paper about the False Baldwin haha. It’s a really fascinating event, it led to a sort of civil war in Flanders and Hainaut where the ruling countess (“his” daughter) lost control over a large amount of her territory. In one of the sources the first appearance of the impostor is described almost exactly like the scene in Life of Brian where the crowd calls him the messiah. After she regained control and executed him, there are actual sources where she is accused of patricide, along with extant miniatures in manuscripts where her face is deliberately scratched out. Amazing hearing the podcast that inspired me to study history in the first place mention him!
