regarding the campaign of 1176; the question remains – would the political capital gained from taking Iconium been worth it, even if it could not be held in the long run?

    • Do you want me to try and answer that on the podcast? Or are you just musing 🙂

If you feel it is a question worth addressing then by all means answer it in the podcast! 🙂

On another note; it is strange feeling a sense of dread for a historical event (1204) that has already happened. I blame your fantastic narration and obvious admiration for Byzantium over the years! 🙂

      • You’re very kind 🙂

Another take on the historian’s trope about the advice of young and old: it could be a kind of literary allusion to the biblical story at 1 Kings 12:1-20, intended as a historiography of imperial hubris.
