Episode 354 – Final Questions

I answer the final batch of questions which came in after 1453. They are mostly fun speculation or about me and the podcast.

Our Constantine Acrostic

Christianized the Roman state,
Oldest offspring of the Great.
Nearly reigned one hundred days,
Saved the city, so they say.
Theophanes called him dung,
Assassinated by his mum.
Noted writer, purple born,
The Slayer’s brother earns our scorn.
If Monomachos tried his best,
No Doukas could save the rest.
Eleven fell amongst the crowd,
So his forebears would be proud.

  1. Hello, this was a really nice episode and I am both sad and relieved that you are winding down the podcast. Sad of course because the podcast has been simply amazing and I’ve learned a lot. Relieved (and overjoyed) that you are expanding your family further and getting some much needed rest.

Happy to continue supporting your efforts if you ever return. 🙏

In regards to the last question, I find it interesting you never thought to combine your experience from TV Critic and History of Byzantium to make an episode dedicated to film/TV adaptations featuring Byzantium. There’s not a lot, but there have certainly been enough to fill an episode. Just a few years ago for example there was a Saudi produced Muawiya series which featured the Romans quite a bit. Arabic media depictions of Eastern Rome are often very interesting since they generally avoid the western orientalist stereotypes, in favor of their own stereotypes which are very foreign to a western audience.

Anyway, bittersweet to know the podcast is winding down, but I can never thank you enough for the decade of free content.

HI Robin, I started listening when you were less than 10 episodes in. Like THOR, I was hooked immediately. At that time I recall a few times that you mentioned that you were concerned about trying to respect Mike Duncan’s format, while leaving room for your own style. I was very impressed with you and your young podcast and left a comment urging you not to worry about Mike, just keep being you. I think it must have been off putting, as within a few days you deleted the comment. I never forgot that, I always wanted to apologize, I’m sorry if it conveyed any lack of respect to you or Mike. Lastly, thanks for many great years of Byzantine history.
