Hi Robin another interesting episode, doing some further reading on the use of Byzantine diplomacy specifically on the the examples you mentioned is this just a further extension of the old Roman feodorati system of diplomacy. As well having taken a recent trip Cordoba i saw an interesting picture which showed one of the Caliphs receiving an embassy from Constantinople as well as the exchange of gifts. The audio guide didn’t mentioned which emperor sent the delegation only that the caliph used a certain room to accept emissaries from both the Byzantine empire and the Holy Roman Empire. how extensive was this diplomatic correspondence and given the conflict erupting the over the Levant and Aleppo between the Byzantines and Fatimids was there any concerted effort to cement an alliance between Constantinople and Cordoba?
