I was hoping in a future podcast you would/could mention the military success of John Kourkouas in the early 10th century. His aggressive push on the Syrian frontier is widely considered to be the first acute instance of the Macedonian “pushback” yet he is so often forgotten under the prestige of Emperors. Also plays well into the narrative of the “tug-of-war” struggle with the Muslims as we progress through the centuries.
