The life of Porphyrius the Charioteer is not one we can dive in to. Very little is known about him but thanks to two unusual sources we can sketch the existence of this fascinating character. In part one we explore the history of Roman spectacles so that we can fully understand the context of Porphyrius’ world.

Thanks for your ongoing Byzantium work.
When it finally comes to the time, it would be great if one of your “Byzantine Stories” could cover Gemistos Plethon (1355-1452) and his student Cardinal Basilios Bessarion (1403-1472). Both of their lives would make for fascinating listening.
Cheers.
Thanks so much for the suggestion 🙂
