Pic: Chlemoutsi Castle (in Andravida in the Peloponnese) was built by the Latin rulers of the Principality of Achaea.
We talk about the Latin occupied parts of Byzantium. What was life like for the conquered and the conquerors? Was the occupation a colonial enterprise?

The last several episodes make me laugh a bit when it is the Romans vs. the Latins as in 340 BC and the wars between Rome and the Latin League. I know the Byzantines referred to themselves as romans. I wonder if the Latins referred to themselves that way – probably not.
When comparing Turkish vs Latin rule, I think an important distinction is missed:
–In feudal europe at least 2/3 of the population were sefs, ie, unfree. Serfs did not have acces to law courts. They were judged by “manorial courts”, which means that their judge was their landlord.. In greece, a large percent of the people were reduced into unfree status, hence they become serfs…
–Islamic societies did not know about serfdom in the western sense. All free people had access to courts. Yes, christians had somewhat diminished rights, but they were fully citizens. Greeks and armenians in ottoman lands were very rich, holding all trade and artisanship within their hands..
Hence islamic rule was very advantageous for Greeks…
Quite disgusting how you refer to Latin occupation as “colonization” but whenever you mention turkish or arab occupation you call it “peaceful co-existence” and how Latins “enforce western ways” but for muslims its “welcome to convert to islam”, really disgusting narrative you’re pushing, from now on I take whatever you say regarding Latins during this narrative with a grain of salt.
Hi there. I used to listen to the History of Rome podcasts, which I loved. I was speaking to a lady yesterday in Stonehaven who mentioned, out of the blue (kinda) that she listened to this Byzantium podcast, … and here I am. I am just about listen to episode 4 and wanted to say well done. I am loving your work, and will be making a donation in due course.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much 🙂
